Custom Quilted tops

I have shown above some of the many quilt tops I have creted for others. Some were custom designed and others were quilt tops provided to me for quilting and binding.

If you have unfinished quilt tops that you have created or acquired over the years and would like to have them completed into a usable quilt, table runner, wall hanging, etc. I can add the backing, batting and quilt it for you and then finish it off with a tasteful binding to complement the quilt. I can even add a label to the quilt to include a name of the original producer of the quilt top/blocks, the person it was gifted to, a date it was created, or any other information that you would want on it. You do not need to baste your quilt sandwich together! Each part, the quilt top, the batting and the backing will be put on the quilting frame separately. You may call or email me, and I will gladly help you in figuring your costs and/or help you in the making of important choices in order for you to get the quilt that will meet your expectations and preferences. If you plan on adding embellishments to your quilt in the form of beads, ribbon, etc. please wait until after the quilting has been completed. Please remove anything, pins, etc. that can damage a needle. There are no guarantees that errors in quilting can be “quilted out”.

Understanding the Process of submitting and having Quilt tops or blocks completed into a finished item:

To get the best results be sure all seams are well pressed on the quilt top and back and all strings are trimmed off. The quilt top and back should lay flat and be square. If the quilt has a top or bottom, please mark them as such. Ripples in the borders will not always “quilt out” so be sure you measure them carefully. Take your measurements from the center of the quilt, not the edge and cut your sides/borders parallel to the selvedge whenever possible for the sides, this will eliminate stretching on the quilting frame.

When I receive your quilt top, it will be inspected to identify any potential problems and I will contact you to discuss solutions and possible options. Your quilting order will be reviewed and you will be contacted to clarify any questions we  may have. A deposit of 50% of the estimated cost must accompany your order and all fees will need to be paid before the quilt is returned to you. An estimated time for completion of the quilt will be provided to you and once your quilt is completed, it is expected to be picked up within 2 weeks from when we notify you that it has been completed or we can direct ship it to you.

There are two pricing structures to consider when wanting a quilt top quilted.

One type is simplest and less expensive which is to have a simple edge to edge continuous design in repeated rows that would include meandering, leaves, swirls, loops, waves, or a multitude of designs that can be either free motioned or now using computerized designs. Once I see your quilt, I can suggest designs that will work for the particular style of your quilt. This design type is charged at .025 cents per inch. Multiply the width in inches by the length in inches of the quilt top you are submitting to get total square inches and then multiply that by .025 per square inch and you will have the total cost for the quilting. You would then need to add shipping costs and binding costs as applicable.

Quilting Design: The second type is custom quilting of your top or blocks in a very detailed design that highlights all areas with specific design complements such as with feathers, grid work, stitch in the ditch, motifs in blocks, special borders, intricate floral designs, geometric patterns, etc. These designs can take twice as long or more than an edge to edge design and are charges at a higher rate.

The cost of this type of quilting is figured the same as above by multiplying the width and length of your quilt top to get your total square inches and then multiplying that by .035 cents per square inch. The design you choose or we work on together will be reviewed with you prior to any quilting being completed on it or you can review some of my work and allow me to freely custom design your quilt.

Thread: Both types of designs include the cost of thread, when using the same color on top and bottom of the quilt. Colored thread can highlight a quilt in special ways when used as a complement to the quilt. Additional thread changes, if you request additional colors will be charged at $5 per color if you request more than one color of thread. Variagated threads will be charged at $7 per color used.

Batting: I can provide batting to you. I most often use a 100% natural cotton in most quilts. A cotton/poly 80/20 blend is available as well as a 100% wool batting (more expensive than the cotton or cotton poly blended battings). I can also provide, a 100% organic cotton batting and an organic cotton/bamboo 60/40 blend that is very lofty and soft at additional cost. All batting is sold to you at cost. You may provide your own batting, just be sure it is at least an additional 6 inches larger than your quilt top on all sides.

Backing: You can provide your own backing, or I can provide one for you at cost of material. If you provide the backing be sure it is at least 6 inches larger than your quilt on all sides. Be sure you remove any hems that may be on the material (particularly if you want to use sheeting as backing). If you piece a back be sure and remove all center selvedges and iron the seams open. Be sure the seams are at least ½ inch on the back for added strength. If you use sheets, please wash first and trim off hems. Also, be sure and iron the quilt top and backings and cut all loose strings before submitting them to me. Long strings can show through your quilt top or backing. If you would like me to provide your backing, a per hour charge will be adding to your invoice for cutting, piecing and ironing your back. I can also choose a one piece backing from material I have in stock to match your quilt top.

Binding: A binding edge will complete your quilt with a nice trim along all edges. This consists of a piece of cut trim sewn to the front side of your quilt and then folded over to the back side of the quilt and hand basted down with mitered corners. This will be charged at $5.00/yd for the material used, which generally takes about a yard, sometimes more for quilts queen or kings sized or less for quilts twin down to crib or lap sized. The actual binding will be at .20 cents per linear inch. Add up all sides of the quilts measurements, then multiply by .20 to get the cost of the binding plus the material used.

I will square up your quilt for you, if you choose to do your own binding at no extra cost.

Labels: If you wish a specific label on your quilt to commemorate a special occasion or special person or to name and date a quilt or the quilt maker it is an extra $20 charge for a label that will match your quilt top or backing and will be machine lettered with embroidery thread.

Sleeve: This is a strip of material to match quilt back, made into a tube and hand sewn to the top of a quilt so that it can be hung against a wall. You may provide the sleeve or sleeve material.

Shipping Costs: These will be charged and incurred as needed. If you are local, we can work out a mutual meeting place, so no additional charges will be incurred.
